New Year, New Approach

Midnight Blue, along with Arts Entwine and All is Pawssible, will be going on hiatus in the first part of 2012. This has been something I have pondering for many months and talking about with my family and advisers and have decided is necessary. I would like to take some time to study and really rework the business completely. While I love our clients and what we do, the business side of things has gotten, well, unwieldy, and needs some attention. I want to take this time to look at everything ... structure, name, brand, plans, systems, procedures, offerings ... top to bottom, with the goal of returning with the amazing creations and services that you all love and we are super excited to provide. For me, it has always been not just about the final deliverable, but the whole experience and I want that to always be exceptional from start to finish for you (and us!).

So ... to our current clients with ongoing projects, we will be there for you through the hiatus, no worries, we won't leave you hanging. To those interested in working with us on new projects ... if you can hold on for a wee bit, we will be back, better than ever.

Can you believe that we have less than two weeks to Christmas? It just struck me over the weekend how quickly it is approaching. My tree is up, but has no lights or ornaments, I've just been too busy. This is going to be a very simple holiday, it seems ... and honestly, that is okay with me. I want to enjoy it and not stress over the little things and I want to get everything I've committed to for others done, that is more important.

I usually like to take holiday photos and post them, but I wanted to let you know why there are none thus far this year ... but ... my heart is full of the holiday spirit and that I send your way as you prepare to share this time of year with those you love.

A Really Nice Day at Black Rock (Eventually)

Had a bit of a rough morning ... my little boy dog ripped his toenail. Oh my, we ended up at the vet. But he is good, all wrapped up and thumping around on his little padded club foot. Made me late for my shift at Winter Glow, so I was scurrying and worrying, but I got there and it was so lovely to see all the art and catch up with people. Had lunch with a friend and fellow instructor. Reconnected with a grandparent of former twin students that may be joining me again in the new year. Sold a notecard, got a commission for an art piece, and maybe will have two portrait sessions. :0) Nice way to spend a Friday ... I've come home with a big smile. Now back to processing senior photos!

Winter Glow 2011

We have not done very many shows this year, kind of an off year, and this will be the last one for 2011. For the first time, I will be showing one of my paintings, along with my photography. ALOG has really grown in the last couple of years and the variety of media and styles represented is outstanding. I'll be working on Friday and will be at the reception, if you want to come by and say "hi"! If you would like more info, please let me know.

Playing Around

Isn't it fun playing around with camera equipment? And especially fun when you get a new toy. I recently invested in a new 70-200mm lens that I am loving and I also upgraded my very old Speedlight, so it will actually talk to my D700. I haven't done this sooner because frankly, I prefer natural light or full-on studio strobes ... but I may be a convert.

Since the only "willing" subjects I have ready access to are the dogs, they are my models. Not a bad thing, they are pretty cute!

Here are some of the photos ... yes, I know, they are not the greatest images, I was more fiddling with equipment, just seeing what things can do. But thought I would share.

As many of you may know, I am an advocate for patronizing local, independent small businesses. They are the backbone of this country and I have been a fan of the 3/50 Project for quite awhile.

As a result, I wanted to share with you my favorite framers. In Gaithersburg ... Kathy's Gallery and Frames. Kathy Wu is fantastic ... her work is great and she is a pleasure to work with. She will give you her thoughts on design, but leaves decisions to you. She is one heck of a mat cutter, we are always amazed. She is not inexpensive, but if you are looking for quality and value, she is an excellent choice. Ring her doorbell, she is there to help.

At Lake of the Ozarks, my favorite framer is Artpho. I love working with the Stranges and their staff. They are also really helpful in making selections that work perfectly with my photography and the results are excellent. They are so patient as we go through the many shades of white (ha, ha)! Great work, great people, I have never been disappointed.

The Sunny f/16 Rule

Do you know what the Sunny f/16 Rule is?

Basically, it is that for correct exposure from 1 hour after sunrise to 1 hour before sunset, on a clear, SUNNY day and when using an aperture of f/16, the shutter speed denominator is the same as your ISO setting. Want to check it out (and make sure your in camera meter is reading accurate)? Late morning, point your camera to a big patch of blue sky (so it fills your viewfinder) in the west (opposite in the afternoon) in Aperture-Priority mode, set at f/16, with no filters on you lens. Your in camera meter should display a shutter speed within about 1/3 of a step of 1/200 second if your ISO is set to 200, 1/400 second, if your ISO is 400, etc. If it's not close, you may want to have your meter checked.

With all the cool gadgets on our cameras, its easy to forget these helpful basics of exposure.

Captivated by the Light

Love, love, love this line! Another one of my many creative loves is architecture. I have considered on several occasions going back to school to study and become an architect (and then I get into calculus class. Ha, ha!) One of these days, I may actually do it. In the meantime, I walk through engaging houses and buildings of my design in my head and enjoy walking through those that are the the realization of others. Part of choosing a home from my perspective has always been about the light, as much as the location and layout. Black Rock Center for the Arts' gallery has beautiful light on a winter's afternoon. The way the sunlight plays about the room is just lovely. I am not sure if it was planned or serendipity, but either way, lucky is the artist who has a show there. I love museums and galleries that are filled with natural light to the point they don't even really need the artificial lights.

The quote above expresses exactly what I love with architecture ... when a building is not forced into its environment, but actually works with it. And when the light falls just right ... oh my, its stunning. It is what makes a building great and it is why I love photography so much ... its about the light.

Have you ever noticed that the quality of light changes from place to place? It really hits me when I fly to southern California ... I exit the airport and the light is so completely different from the Mid-Atlantic coast or the Midwest. I don't know that I can even describe why ... maybe its clarity or saturation ... but it is distinct. Yes, the quality of light changes throughout the day and year wherever you are, but because its more subtle with its gradual evolution, I think it does not always make the same kind of immediate impression.

Part of splendid composition, no matter what our art form, is consideration of the quality of light. It has a major effect in our work. Is it hard or soft? Is it warm or cool? How does it play? What does it do? From where is it coming? What happens when it changes? As artists, we want to provide the greatest visual impact and light is a huge part of doing that.

For photographers (or actually any 2-D representational artist), an interesting exercise is to create a series of images of exactly the same location, with only the light changing. Either capturing different times of day or different seasons (or both). It helps to create the visual reference of how the quality of light can impact a composition. There was a really interesting exhibit at The Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego last time I was there several years ago. If I am remembering correctly, the photographer took a photo every morning from his window overlooking the ocean for a year ... it was an wonderful study in changing light.

I am most definitely captivated by light ... I love to watch it evolve. When it is bewitching, if I have presence of mind, I am running for my camera. I think I tend to like when the light is soft, warm and low, but it all depends on the subject. It all has its place. While I have been writing, I have been watching the sunlight move across my back garden ... it is beautiful.

Birthday Party!

I was thrilled to be the art instructor for the most delightful birthday, today. The birthday girl and seven of her friends came to paint with me today at the Arts Barn. Their paintings were very nicely done with about an hour and a half to work together. The theme for her party was all about painting... licorice "paint brushes", little artist palettes with candy and a really cute artist palette for her cake. The invitation was also super. Such fun!!

It has been awhile since I helped with a birthday party, I've missed it. And it was a great pleasure to be a part of this special young lady's day.

Sorry no photos ... I was too busy helping in the creation of masterpieces!

The invitation used the blue, yellow and white color scheme and had a sweet, dimensional daisy. The escort cards for the guests were also a favor ... pretty daisies in petite vase with the name and table number attached with a gingham bow. Simple, casual, fresh ... that was this wedding's theme.

I was reminded today how totally cool it is that everyone's vision is unique. I met with one of my students and so enjoyed looking through her work from the past couple weeks. She loves photographing people in a candid way ... just on the street, doing their thing and it really is fascinating ... especially the series she captures, they are a tiny glimpse into a life. She is also really great at noticing color and texture ... something I am drawn to, as well.

Anyway, she has been trying to be sensitive to strangers perhaps not wanting their picture taken and has focused on a collection of photos of feet to preserve anonymity. So cool ... every time she comes in with some fun photos. Today we were loving this pair of shoes (I was wondering how anyone can actually walk in them!) and I wanted to share it with you ...

The invitation and enclosures had the faux bois finish to set the tone for a wedding amongst the trees. The invitation was backed with a natural cardstock to give it more weight and finished appearance and had an acorn and oak leaf charm tied to the bottom. The brown envelopes were lined with beautiful paisley in the rich tones of autumn.

The invitation was backed with a matching blue and white striped cardstock to give it more weight and finished appearance and had rhinestone "snowflakes" applied. The box top had a rhinestone snowflake on a blue ribbon attached and was lined with blue cardstock. The box was filled with a bed of crystals that sparkled like snow.

Beautiful Spring Day!

This morning I went out with my two private students to photograph around the Kentlands on an amazing, spring day. We could not have asked for a prettier conditions to be out and about ... sunny, perfect temperature, very light breeze and the flowers in full-out bloom. I can't wait to see what they came back with! The peeks on their monitors hold a lot of promise ...

I don't generally take my camera out with me when I am teaching, so I can completely focus on helping my students. So I just caught a few shots with my iPhone while I was demoing some composition points.

It has happened to us plenty of times, thus why we decided to start designing and crafting for ourselves and others like us that want a unique, custom designed stationary that is an exact fit, not a compromise.

When Do I Need to Find an Invite/Stationary Designer?

Ideally, if you are wanting a custom stationary suite for your wedding, you should plan to hire your designer about 9 months out from the big day. This will give us plenty of time to work with you on your design and have your "Save the Date" cards ready to mail at 6 months prior to the wedding. The more upfront time you can give, the less stressful and more fun it will be! But don't worry if you have less time, still come for a consultation and we'll work with you on a plan that will fit in your time frame.

Private Lessons

I am honored to currently have two lovely women taking private lessons with me. They want to learn how to use their cameras and build on their creative photography skills. We are having such a great time!

Our beginning lessons have focused on the functions of the camera and the basic premise of photography ... light. The first concept that every photographer needs to understand is that photography is basically learning to paint with light. Just as a painter uses their paint, we use light to create our images. So, if you learn how your camera functions to control light, you will have the foundation to build on. This can be a tricky concept to grasp at first ... especially how the aperture and shutter work together, but the concept suddenly clicks and then the magic begins.

If you are new to photography, don't get frustrated, you can master the basic technical stuff ... find a mentor that you like working with and get a little help with the basics. You'll then be on your way!

The Center graciously allows the Art League of Germantown to meet in their space in exchange for our membership providing volunteer services, such as helping to hang new shows in the gallery. In addition to doing my part to help, I think it's good for the soul to spend some time with others artwork. This is an interesting exhibit ... a mix of wood sculpture, acrylic painting, and photos on fiber. I was especially interested in the wood sculpture, something I have never done and helping to hang it, meant I got to be up close, far away and touch it. It's really fascinating. I also learned about hanging some really big, heavy pieces of artwork and brushed up some general hanging mechanics ... also good stuff! All in all, a positive way to spend a few hours of early 2011 ...

Finding the Right Photographer

I may or may not be the right photographer for you.

If the photographer you are considering does not admit this to you ... be skeptical. Photography is an art and like any art form, there will be work you like and work that does not resonate with you. Creating images is also about a relationship ... the more comfortable you are with a photographer, the better the images will be.

Before you invest your time and money in creating images, please take the time to meet with the photographer(s) you are considering. Look at their portfolios, talk to them about what you are looking for in the way of imagery, ask what their process is like and what ideas they might have for working with you. And of course, ask about pricing, too. This time spent together upfront is time very well spent, because its going to mean much better results for you.

The consultation is common practice when someone commissions a painting ... most people don't just walk in a studio and say, "Hey, paint a picture for me". They want to meet the artist and get to know them and their work and vice versa, too. And photography, like painting, is a form of imagery-making and deserves careful consideration, too.

I am not the right photographer for everyone ... my imagery tends to have a quiet, reflective nature to it. It can be a little quirky at times. I don't do the traditional, posed group in front of a backdrop thing. I prefer to work with natural light or highly technical studio lighting. But when I am the right photographer for you ... let the magic begin.

Winter Portraiture

We document the lives of our kids pretty routinely in imagery and those are wonderful and very precious memories. But you know, we often forget to document our own lives, beyond perhaps the occasional random snapshots. We hear all the time about how people hate how they look in photos, so they don't want them taken. I am so guilty of this, too! But if the only images are those of you caught in a unplanned snapshot, no wonder you don't like having your picture taken. Bad lighting, weird angles, crazy expressions, hair freaked out ... I have a box full of these, hidden ... deep ... at the back of the closet. I admit it, I tend to run and hide when those little cameras come out and start flashing. And what is even worse is its a bad setup to believe we are not photogenic and thus, never, ever want our photos taken. And this is sad ... we are robbing the next generations of a precious gift of being able to see our images as our lives progress and reflect on their ancestry. And the thing is, you are photogenic ... we all are. We are unique and beautiful and that should be documented.

That is where having someone who understands the art and technology of photography comes in ... while most families have a camera and hopefully know basically how to use it (if not, I can help there, too!) ... what is different about working with someone who has studied and practiced is that we have developed the skills and knowledge to capture an image in a way that reflects what is unique and beautiful about you.

And you should not have to be uncomfortable in front of the camera, it should be fun and relaxing. There should be music and laughter and real smiles. You should get to feel like your fabulous self. Be silly if you want, try out a bunch of different outfits and poses, sing, dance ... whatever it means to be you. You should lose all track of time because you are having a great time.

The upcoming months are PERFECT for having portraits made in the studio or in your home. The holiday rush is through and life slows down a bit as we snuggle indoors. The winter light coming through the windows is soft. We can spend plenty of quality time together, creating images that reflect who you are as an individual or a family.

Moriah

One of the things we like to do is partner with other photographers. It's fun and you often get even better results (when you have synergy). We have been doing this for awhile ... offering tech support at the shoot (lighting, metering, props, posing, etc) and/or doing the post-processing and proofing-prep. Moriah's senior photos is just one of these projects ... the person behind the camera was Steve Dougan, of Dougan Photography. We offered studio tech support and post-processing.

Moriah is a senior this year and so much fun (and definitely beautiful)! She is a natural in front of the camera, she could easily model if she so chooses. She was game to try most any of the crazy poses we came up with for her, which made it fun, but also then an individual experience.

So, anyway, the three of us had great synergy ... here are some of the highlights from the final 26 images in her collection. We, of course, have some traditional senior shots, but also some that are a little different (which is the objective for us).

PS - the last one is not Photoshop, that is all studio lighting ...

Charcoal Drawings

I have had the pleasure (and a bit of frustration with glass ;0) ) of photographing a small set of charcoal drawings these past couple days for a new client. Beautiful drawings of the nude figure, they take me right back to art school. I have not had a chance to really play with charcoal in awhile. I have had brief encounters with it when teaching kid's art classes, but they don't seem to really get into it at that age, they like working with color better. There is really nothing like charcoal ... I am one of those people that love it, I come away covered with smudges and dust from moving it across the paper, the amounts ebbing and flowing in an effort to recreate the image at hand. I like the lightness of it, I like how it feels on the paper. It is kind of akin to photography and light, but with more direct, detailed control. I am thinking I need to take advantage of one of the open studios being offered around here and go draw, just for me!

I usually share the images of my clients to help promote their work and these are lovely. While I find nudes artistic and expressive of the beauty of being human, I know that is not everyone's sensibilities or perhaps they are just not appropriate for their situation at this time. Anyway, if you would like to see his work, let me know ... I'll post them to Flickr and provide limited access. He is going to put together a website, so I will let you know when that is up and running, too.

An iPhone Experiment

I did a little experiment yesterday while I was out teaching ... I did not bring my camera with me, just my iPhone. I took two images on our walk back to the Arts Barn and these are what I came up with.

They did take a little bit of work in Photoshop, because I could not adjust any settings during capture, but that little gadget does not do too bad in a pinch. These were taken late afternoon, so the light was getting low and pretty contrasty, especially shooting out of the shadows. I cropped to square, sharpened them to compensate for hand holding the camera, I adjusted the levels just slightly, I toned down the highlights using a graduated neutral density filter and added the frame.

I may try going back out with my regular camera and tripod and reshooting this afternoon, just to compare. Anyway, fun experiment!

Photo Workshop - October 23rd

Next Saturday (10/23), we will be teaching a beginning composition class for digital photography. It will be starting at 1:30 pm at the Arts Barn and last for about 3 hours.

The first 45 minutes, we'll be talking about composition and sharing photos. We'll then pack up our photo gear and head out into the neighborhood to take some autumn photos. The leaves are changing in earnest now and if the sun is out, we should get some great photos. Last check of registration, there were a couple of slots left ... come join us!

There is camaraderie, just getting out with other photographers. It's the photographer's version of Plein Air!! :0)

This piece speaks of promise to me. I took it of a rose in our backyard (before the demise of the rose bushes by my favorite gardening bully) ... what is it about roses that just exude beauty? I have the piece in several different versions, I always find a new way of working with the image, it is just lovely to spend time with.

Shooting Star

This is a photograph I took, actually almost a decade ago now, of one of the stars on the side of the Gaithersburg Arts Barn. These were used in old buildings to help keep the sides from bowing out and toppling. I loved how the mortar had splashed to make it look like it was shooting ...

As a Kentlander/Lakelander that loves it here, this represents our neighborhood and what is great about it to me as a leading neo-traditional/new urbanist community.

I made a "to do" list yesterday, just to try to keep track of all of the projects and tasks I have ... it filled an entire page and I was not even done yet. Is that crazy? Do other people have lists like this? Granted, some items were just a matter of a phone call, but still .... good grief. I know some of the build up is because I have been dragging and not able to accomplish what I think I should, but that sure seems like a lot.

Autumn Photo Workshops

We wanted to share with you two photo workshops that we will be leading this autumn ...

The first will be at the Kentlands in Gaithersburg, Maryland ... on Saturday, October 23rd at 1 pm, we will be talking about composition and then heading out into the neighborhood to put our skills into practice. If the weather cooperates with us, it should be a really gorgeous time of year to be out around the lakes. We'll show you how to get off of "auto" or "program" and use some of those other settings on your camera, too. And there is the opportunity to share your photos via email after the session for some constructive feedback of the images you capture that day. It's always fun and a great excuse to get outside and take some photos just for you!

The second workshop will be in Osage Beach, Missouri on Saturday, October 30th. We will leading the way onto some amazing private property that has yet to be developed ... we'll encounter lakes, waterfalls, bluffs, and we suspect the trees will be glorious, if Mother Nature cooperates this year. While there is no formal instruction planned, it will be a great opportunity to be out with other photographers and swap notes, ideas, techniques, etc. We'll be helping however you need us. Again, there will be the option to upload and share your photos after the session. Are you wanting to take pictures off the beaten paths at the Lake and have a day of camaraderie? This is your chance!

What will you need? Bring your camera equipment, including a tripod or monopod. You may want a backpack, comfortable bag or a photo vest to carry things along with you. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes for hiking off path and comfortable clothes for being outdoors. And you might want to bring something to drink along, as well.

Unexpected

This has been a summer of the unexpected. We have had some lessons in adapting to unanticipated change, going with the flow and not planning too far ahead, asking for understanding and sometimes help, and just plain having to say, "I'm sorry, I want to, but I just can't right now". It is kind of a weird way to be operating ... not our usual "modus operandi" at all. While we are all about new ideas and challenges, the rest comes a harder, especially not planning ahead very far and having to say "no". It feels a little flaky, which is not so good. We don't ever like or want to leave our clients and partners without a plan, date, help, etc. Yuck!

We write this because we wanted to say a HUGE "thank you" to the clients and partners that have hung in there with us through this craziness ... with understanding, patience, and friendship. You know who you are and you are awesome!

We are working now each day as much as we can. Some days are busy and full, and others, as frustrating as it is, by midday, we have to call it quits for the day. As a result, for now, we are continuing to keep our workload light and putting deadlines pretty far out there ... so we humbly ask for continued understanding. It won't be forever this way ... things are getting better and we look forward to each day bringing more balance.

Please do contact us about projects ... if we can, we will ... if we can't, we may have some great alternatives to share with you.

Beyond Camp

One of the things we enjoy about summer is it is time to teach art camp for us. It is really fun and rewarding, even with the hours of prep and well, to put it delicately, not exorbitant compensation. We love having the opportunity to provide a fun environment in which to explore art. While other instructors may approach it differently, we figure its summer, not school-time, so we don't want to focus on skill-building ... this should be an opportunity just to try something different. Maybe its something outside the school curriculum ... maybe its something too messy to do at home ... maybe they are just new to being a young artist. Whatever the reason ... we just want to encourage the kids to try it ... they don't have to be experts at the end, they don't even have to produce something refrigerator-worthy. It's time to play and to try and that is what we support and encourage. We so love the faces on the last day, as they show all their projects to their parents at the art show and explaining what they did ... there you see the joy ... and that is the reward.

Alas ... we are sorry to see this year's camp time has come to an end ... but its time to start dreaming about next year's adventures. And that it always is ...

What am I listening to in the studio, while I am working at the computer? My current favorite is: Mary Chapin Carpenter's The Age of Miracles. She has always been one of my favorites and I was really happy to see the new release. It's wonderful new work ... another classic.

About: The Age of Miracles is the 3rd Zoe/Rounder release from world renowned singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter. The Age of Miracles has been a work in progress since 2007. The album is a personal exploration of regret and resilience but also a larger, more universal expression of wonder at the times we are living in. Carpenter is backed by an incredible band that includes Matt Rollings (piano, B-3 organ), Russ Kunkel (drums), Duke Levine (electric and acoustic guitar), Glenn Worf (bass), Dan Dugmore (steel and 12 string guitar) and Eric Darken (percussion).
